Helpful Tips to Avoid Flat Tire Assistance

Of all the parts on your car, only one actually touches the road: the tires.  It’s amazing to think that these formed rubber and steel wheel are the primary component keeping you and your family safe at high speeds from the rough pavement.

As a towing / roadside service provider, we get our fair share of flat tire assistance calls, a good portion of which could have been avoided or delayed had the tires been properly cared-for.  So today we wanted to talk about some completely doable habits for increasing the life of this all-too-important part of your vehicle.

Today’s Tire Are Good, But…

Over the years manufactures have designed some pretty amazing tires capable of withstanding all kinds of road conditions, surface textures and speeds.  Good tires can last up to 50,000 miles or more provided that the driver take care to schedule proper maintenance, rotation and driving.  However, even with all that’s happened in tire advancement, there’s no current tires that can be used forever.  They do need to be replaced.  As a result drivers need to regularly inspect and maintain the tires of their vehicle to ensure safe usage and to maximize their longevity.

Here’s some things you’ll want to add to your car’s preventative maintenance schedule to maximize the life of your vehicle’s tires:

Tire Pressure

Improperly inflated tires are detrimental to your pocketbook in a couple of ways.  Improperly inflated tires wear on the inside and outside of the Keep a weekly check on your tire’s pressure as properly inflated tires will enable you to drive the car smoothly and speedily. Avoid over-inflating or under-inflating the tires as it can be risky on the road and it may also lead to accidents. In case if you don’t know the appropriate way to measure tire pressure then read the car manual or contact the manufacturer.

Tire Alignment

Cars that tend to drift consistently one side or the other when the wheel is centered indicate that the tires are improperly aligned.  Over time improper alignment can create premature wear on your tires thereby limiting the effective lifespan, and if it’s bad enough can cause a tire to rupture.  In addition to adding life to your tires, properly aligned tires will deliver a more comfortable, convenient and safe driving experience.

Rotate your tires every 6 months or 6,000 miles. A good rule of thumb is to rotate your tires every other oil change. Rotating them ensures that they wear evenly.

Driving Fast

If possible, drive at the speed limit.  Driving at a high speeds creates excessive heat which diminishes the durability of tires. It is also recommended that avoid driving over potholes, the edge of the pavement or over the curbs. If you are purchasing tires from an online store, then consider visiting the best place to buy tires online.

Avoid Mixing Tires

Avoid using different types of tires on your vehicle.  An example would be using a pair or normal tread depth with another pair of deep tread depth. Same goes with using a bias-ply tire with a radial as the tire differences creates uneven wear on the tires and premature obsolesces.

Quality Matters

If possible, buy quality tire from names you know.  Rubber composition plays a huge part the life of the tire and unless you’re an industry expert, you never know what corner are being cut with cheaper, off-brand tires.  Additionally choose a tire that works for your vehicle.  If the ride was fine with your particular brand, insist on it with the replacement.

Tire Replacement Rules

When it comes time to replace a car tire it is normally recommended to replace all four tires at once to ensure peak performance. For various reasons this is not always possible for drivers. Normally the manufacturer of the vehicles will have instructions or recommendations listed in the user manual. Always follow these specific instructions if they have been provided.

Replacing two tires is similar, but both new tires should be placed on the rear axel unless the new tires are at a lower speed rating than is standard. Normally the deeper the tread is on a tire, the better if can grip the road and release water.
